After analyzing the difference between the 1990s standards and the 2000s standards, I have come to a general conclusion. The large difference I see between the timeframes is that technology changed dramatically, therefore, expectations had to change. Since there is more advanced technology, there are higher expectations of the students and teachers. I think that the technology standards in 2025 will accommodate the technology that is developed by then.
From birth, students will have been surrounded by our current technology and will already be familiar with what we have right now. Once those students have arrived in 2025, technology will have advanced so much that the standards will have to reflect those changes. We have to ask ourselves, what do we want students to learn in order to best prepare them for the real world?
As a teacher, in order for me to meet these future standards, I will have to constantly stay up to date on technology. I can't expect the school district that I'm working at to provide me with that training. I will have to continue to self-educate myself for a lifetime to adapt to the new technology and standards. If I don't take the responsibility to stay educated in technology, then no one will make me and that's not best teaching practice.
I would like to comment on your reflection above. You truely have a sense of where technology is heading, and can see the possibilities of it all. And yes, we all need to become life long learners, as far as tech and access to information is concerned. Here is my view of the standards you are talking about, and I believe you are addressing the NETS-S standards? The changes in the standards reflect the focus for teaching and learning technology. The old standards reflected a process for learning the 'technology' and not for utilizing the technology. The new standards focus on teaching and learning in order to achieve higher order thinking skills, and 21st century skills.
ReplyDeleteNice job on your blog, I LOVE it.
If you need any advice, you know where to go.

Thank you for commenting on my blog. It's a work in progress and eventually I will tweak it for school in the fall. I was creating all this while I was learning and as you can see, I had to do assignments on here to learn how to use the technology. Yes, you are absolutely correct about the NETS standards. I'm sure you are already a pro on how to do everything and I may pick your brains when I get stumped. Have you ever used Prezi.com before? I chose this program/website to use for my key assessment (last day of class). It's my latest post. It's such a cool tool to use instead of power point. I still have to learn so much more about Prezi, but I look forward to using it more often. :)
